Why are Central and Eastern Europe still the regions with the highest cardiovascular diseases?

Despite a steady decrease in the cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) following the disintegration of the Soviet bloc in 1989 and accession to the European Union (EU), the East-West disparities are still significant, with mortality rates being about three times higher. CVDs are responsible for nearly one-third of all deaths across CEE, making it the region with the highest cardiovascular disease burden worldwide.
