This paper attempts to shed a light on socioeconomic and environmental issues involving extractive activities in the Brazilian Amazonia in order to foster sustainability. By doing so, it raises the question of how to increase the role of indigenous and local people in building a sustainable future, shifting from logging and illegal mining in the Legal Amazon to renewable resources. Further, the paper proposes ways in which Amazonia can benefit from its vibrant environment, enhancing local and indigenous businesses while protecting its resources.
